Quick answer

This dog booties size chart works from one number. To find your dog's boot size, measure the widest part of a standing front paw in inches and enter it in the finder below. It shows each maker's own size. Ruffwear says to size down between sizes. Pawz and Muttluks size by paw length, so they are listed separately.

Updated October 13, 2026. This dog booties size chart puts the published paw widths of the booties in our data into one table, and the finder below it turns your dog's measurement into a size for each maker. It does not say which boot is better. It tells you what each maker's own chart says about your number. Specs last checked: October 13, 2026

Size finder: enter your dog's paw width

How to measure: stand your dog on a sheet of paper, press down gently on the paw, mark the widest point of the front paw on each side and measure between the marks. Measure the front paws: they are usually the wider pair.

How to measure a dog's paw for boots

Measure the widest part of the paw while the dog stands on it. A paw spreads under weight, so a lifted paw reads small. Kurgo says the same: measure the width, not the length, with the dog standing.

  1. Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor and have your dog stand with weight on the paw.
  2. Mark the paper at the widest point on each side of one paw, not counting fur.
  3. Measure between the marks in inches.
  4. Repeat on every paw. Ruffwear says to measure all of them, since front and rear can differ.

The AKC offers a variation: press the paw into paper to mimic its natural splay, trace the outline, draw a line across the widest part and measure the line.

Width or length: the makers disagree

The biggest source of wrong sizes is reading a chart built on a different measurement. Here is what each maker in our data says to measure.

MakerMeasureHow the maker describes it
RuffwearWidthAcross the widest part of the paw while bearing weight; measure all paws.
KurgoWidthWidest part of the paw with the dog standing; front and back paws separately.
Canada PoochWidth and lengthPaw flat on the ground. Width is edge to edge. Length runs from the nail to where the paw stops touching the ground. The Soft Shield chart in our table uses width.
Non-stop DogwearWidthChart in centimeters, converted here at 2.54 cm per inch. The maker has a separate measuring guide that we did not read.
PawzLengthFrom the back of the large rear pad to the tip of the longest nail. Its blog also describes tracing the paw to find the width.
MuttluksLengthFront paw on paper; mark the longest toenail tip and a point straight down the back of the leg.
Walkee PawsWidth plus heightWidest point of the paw pad, inside to inside and excluding fur, with the dog standing; height from floor to shoulder blades.

Dog booties size chart: all brands in one table

These are the paw-width charts the makers publish, taken from the same data the finder uses. Widths are in inches as published. Ruffwear and Kurgo publish one width per size, shown as "one width per size". Canada Pooch and Non-stop Dogwear publish a range per size. Compare brands by width, never by size name: a Medium from one maker is not a Medium from another.

Paw widths are the makers’ own size charts. Some makers publish a range per size; others publish one width per size, shown as “one width per size”. Sizes differ between brands, so always check the chart of the exact product.

Brands that size by paw length or another measure

These cannot be read against a width, so they are shown on their own. Always confirm on the maker's page, because some makers show different charts on different pages.

If your dog is between sizes: each maker's rule

This is where the charts differ most, and where the finder follows the maker rather than guessing. The rule we apply for each is below.

  • Ruffwear (Grip Trex, Summit Trex, Polar Trex). One width per size. The maker says to size down if the paw falls between two sizes. The finder shows the nearest size that is not wider than your paw, and names the next size up for comparison. A paw of 2.4 in shows 2.25 in.
  • Kurgo (Blaze Cross). One width per size, and no between-sizes rule in what we read. The finder shows both neighbors and does not choose, so a 2.4 in paw shows X-Small (2.25 in) and Small (2.5 in).
  • Canada Pooch (Soft Shield). A range per size, with gaps (for example 1.3 to 1.5 in is in no size) and a shared edge: 2.5 in belongs to both size 3 and size 4. The finder lists every size whose range includes your number, and says "between sizes" when none does. We found no maker rule.
  • Non-stop Dogwear (Protector bootie). A range per size, where neighbors share an edge, so a paw at exactly 3.15 in matches XL and 2XL. We did not read a maker rule.
  • Pawz. On its length chart, the maker says to go larger if between sizes.
  • Muttluks. Choose the smallest size that fits the whole paw.
  • Walkee Paws. The paw should be no wider than the size maximum and the height should be in range; between sizes, a smaller size fits tighter and a larger one goes on more easily.

The tool matches a width to a published number. Even where the maker gives a rule, a tape-measure error of a quarter inch can move you a full size on a 0.25 in chart, so measure twice and use the dog's widest paw as the guide. Per Ruffwear, front and rear can take different sizes.

Limitations

  • Only Ruffwear Grip Trex was read directly on the maker's page. The other numbers come from search extracts of maker pages and are marked unverified on the product data until confirmed. Confirm on the maker's page before you buy.
  • The finder knows nothing about your dog's coat, paw shape or dew claw position. Kurgo notes that a tight shoe can rub the dew claw and a loose one can slip off.
  • It does not use weight. Ruffwear says weight is not used for its sizing, and dogs of the same weight can have different paws.
  • Retailers sometimes print different charts for the same brand. We use the maker's. Where a maker shows several charts, we say so and link to it.
  • It is not a fit guarantee and we have not tried these boots on dogs. A boot that matches the chart can still slip. Our dog booties page covers the other causes.

Frequently asked questions

How to measure dog paw for boots?

Stand your dog on a sheet of paper so the paw carries weight, mark the widest point on each side, and measure between the marks in inches. Do every paw, because front and rear can differ. Pawz and Muttluks instead want paw length, measured to the tip of the longest nail, so read the maker's instructions first.

What size dog boots do I need?

It depends on the brand, because charts are not shared. Measure the widest part of the paw, then read the chart for the exact product. In the finder above, a paw 2.5 in wide is Ruffwear 2.50 in, Kurgo Small and Canada Pooch 3 or 4, while a 2.4 in paw falls between two Ruffwear sizes and the maker says to size down.

What is the Ruffwear boot size chart?

Ruffwear publishes one paw width per size, from 1.50 in to 3.25 in in 0.25 in steps (eight sizes) for Grip Trex, and the same range appeared on the Summit Trex and Polar Trex pages we read. The width is the size, with no letters. Measure across the widest part of the paw when it bears weight.

What if my dog is between boot sizes?

Use the maker's rule where there is one. Ruffwear says to size down. Pawz says to go larger, on its length chart. Muttluks says to choose the smallest size that fits the whole paw. Kurgo, Canada Pooch and Non-stop Dogwear gave no rule in what we read, so check the maker's page or ask the maker.

Do front and back paws need different boot sizes?

They can. Ruffwear says to measure all paws and notes that front and rear pairs can be different sizes. Muttluks advises sizing one smaller for the rear paws on some models, such as Snow Mushers and Mud Monsters, not the model in our data.

Why does the finder show a size for Ruffwear and Kurgo but not Pawz?

The finder reads paw width. Pawz and Muttluks publish paw length charts, and Walkee Paws publishes maximum width plus dog height in several versions. Putting a width into a length chart would give a wrong size, so those three are listed with a link to the maker's chart.
