Dexas MudBuster Review: Do MudBusters Work?

Quick answer

This Dexas MudBuster review is based on published specs, not hands-on use. The MudBuster is a manual cup with silicone bristles: add water, insert the paw, twist. It suits dogs whose paw width fits one of three sizes. It will not replace a towel for caked mud between toes.

This is a Dexas MudBuster review for people deciding whether a cup-style paw washer is worth buying, and which size to pick. It is built from Dexas's published specifications and public retailer listings. We have not used the product, so nothing here is a test result. Where the maker says nothing, the page says so.

Verdict by dog type

The MudBuster is a small tumbler with soft silicone bristles inside. You add water, push a paw in, twist, lift out and dab dry. There is no battery and no motor. That simplicity is the whole pitch, and it is also the limit: you clean one paw at a time, and you get what a rinse and a bristle scrub can do.

  • Small dogs with paws up to about 2 in wide. The Small is the obvious match. It is 4.3 in tall, so it is easy to keep by the door.
  • Medium dogs with paws of roughly 2.5 to 3.5 in. The Medium fits that range on Dexas's store text. A different Dexas page and some retailer listings give other numbers for Medium, so measure before you order (see the size chart).
  • Large dogs with paws wider than 3.5 in. The Large is 8.85 in tall and 4.75 in wide. Check that you have room to store something that tall.
  • Dogs that hate paw handling. No cup fixes that. A nervous dog may need weeks of treat-based practice before any cleaner is usable.
  • Dogs with long feathering or thick fur between the toes. Maker information on this is absent. Expect to finish with a towel and possibly a comb.

Breeds are a poor guide to size. Paw width varies within a breed, so use a measurement, not a breed name.

Do MudBusters work?

The mechanism is sound for what it claims. Water softens dried mud, soft bristles move it off the paw, and a cup catches the mess at the door instead of on your floor. What we cannot tell you is how thoroughly it cleans, how often it leaves dirt behind, or how a particular dog reacts. Those need hands-on use, and we have none. If you want a second opinion, read owner comments on retailer listings and treat them as individual stories, not measurements.

Whether you need a gadget at all depends on your walks. For light dirt, a damp towel by the door does the job. A cup earns its place when the mud is wet, deep and frequent. Our guide to cleaning dog paws covers the towel-and-wipes routine and when it is enough.

Specs

Figures below come from the Dexas store text as quoted in search results, because Dexas pages could not be fetched directly when we checked. "Not stated by maker" means we found nothing.

Figures are the makers’ published specifications. = not stated by the maker.

Specs last checked: October 13, 2026 Dexas also sells a lidded version in Medium and Large, listed separately. The standard cup in the table has no lid recorded. Weight, full materials, BPA-free status and leak-proofness are not stated by the maker in anything we found.

How to use the MudBuster

Dexas's own instructions are short: add water, insert the muddy paw, twist, dab dry. The steps below add the practical details. They are general advice for this kind of cleaner, so follow the packaging if it says otherwise.

  1. Pick the size by measuring the paw, not by breed. Measure the widest point of a standing front paw; the size finder page shows how.
  2. Rinse the cup before first use and look at the bristles.
  3. Stand the cup on a mat or tray near the door, with a towel ready.
  4. Fill it part-way with lukewarm water. Leave room, because water rises when the paw goes in.
  5. Guide one paw in. Do not force it.
  6. Twist slowly from side to side, then lift the paw out.
  7. Dab the paw dry and spread the toes to check between them.
  8. Change the water when it turns muddy, then repeat for the other paws.

Plain water is the usual approach. If you add anything, use a product made for dogs, never human shampoo, and ask your vet about any skin condition. If dried mud is caked on, loosen it with a splash of water first. A nervous dog does better with short sessions and treats; stop if the dog is distressed.

Cleaning the cup

Empty it after use, rinse the cup and the bristle base under running water until clear, shake it out and let it dry somewhere airy before storing. Drying fully matters for any damp household item, because trapped water can leave a smell. Dishwasher use is not covered by anything Dexas publishes that we could find, so hand rinsing is the safe default. We have not timed how long it takes to dry and give no figure.

Troubleshooting

The paw touches the bottom

The usual cause is a cup that is too small. Compare your measurement with the maker's ranges. If it is at or over the upper edge for your size, look at the next size up. Cup heights are 4.3 in (Small), 6 in (Medium) and 8.85 in (Large) per the maker and retailer listings, and the maker does not publish an interior depth.

Water leaks or splashes

Most spills come from overfilling, or from a paw too large for the opening that pushes water over the rim. Fill less, and check the size. If you have the lidded version, check that the lid is seated and the seal is clean. If water seeps from a seam of an unlidded cup, stop using it and contact the seller or Dexas; a defective item is a warranty question, not a technique problem. We found no maker statement about leaks and have not checked for them ourselves.

Mud is left between the toes

No cup reaches every gap. Dirt tends to stay when the water is already dirty, the paw is a loose fit, or the mud is dry and caked. Use fresh water for each paw or every second paw, loosen the mud first, and finish with a towel while gently spreading the toes. Treat the cup as a first pass, not a guarantee. Persistent redness, swelling or licking between the toes is a reason to call your vet, not to scrub harder.

Comfort and safety

Dexas describes the bristles as soft silicone inside an easy-to-grip tumbler. We could not find a statement about the plastic used for the cup, or any maker guidance on puppies, injured paws or fur type. That leaves a few situations where we make no safety claim.

  • Healthy adult paws: start gently with lukewarm water and watch the dog's reaction. Stop at any sign of pain.
  • Puppies: not addressed by the maker. Ask your vet and go slowly.
  • Torn or cracked nails, cuts, sore pads, stitches or open sores: do not use a scrubbing tool without your vet's approval. A twisting motion in a cup of bristles may irritate a wound.
  • Long fur between the toes: ask a groomer or your vet about trimming and cleaning.
  • Limping, licking or flinching when the paw is touched: that is a vet visit first.

We are not veterinarians, and nothing on this site is veterinary advice.

Durability: what to check

Dexas states no lifespan, and we have not used one long term, so we give no durability figures. A MudBuster is a molded cup with silicone bristles and nothing electrical, so if you saw something about MudBuster battery life, the source was describing a different product. As it ages, check these things:

  • Bent, torn or flattened bristles: they may stop cleaning well or feel rough. Replace the cup.
  • Cracks in the cup: it may leak. Stop using it.
  • A lid that no longer seats (lidded version): carry it empty or replace it.
  • A smell or residue after rinsing: dirt may be sitting in the bristle base. Rinse thoroughly and dry fully.

Look-alike cups exist, so check that the Dexas name is on the item you receive. Stores differ in what they stock, and we do not track availability or which retailer has which size.

Who should skip it

  • You walk mostly on dry paths. A towel is cheaper and faster.
  • Your dog will not tolerate paw handling at all.
  • Your dog has a paw injury, skin problem or allergy flare. Ask your vet before using any scrubbing tool.
  • Your dog's paw width falls outside all three ranges, or in the gap between Small and Medium. Check the size finder and the maker's chart first.
  • You want a dishwasher-safe product. Dexas does not say the MudBuster is.

Alternatives and where to buy

The closest alternative is another cup, and the two most searched are covered in separate comparisons: Paw Plunger vs MudBuster and MudBuster vs Arcadia Trail. Our overview of dog paw cleaners also covers other formats.

If you decide on the MudBuster, you can check the current listing for the Small, the Medium or the Large on Amazon. Dexas also sells through its own store and other retailers. Compare return terms wherever you buy. We show no prices because they change.

Frequently asked questions

Do MudBusters work?
For loosening mud and rinsing one paw at a time, the design is sensible: water, soft silicone bristles and a twist. We have not used one, so we cannot say how clean the paws come out. Expect a first pass, then finish with a towel.
Do you put water in the MudBuster?
Yes. Dexas describes the steps as add water, insert the paw, twist, then dab dry. Fill it only part-way, because the water level rises when a paw goes in.
Can the MudBuster go in the dishwasher?
The maker does not say. We found no dishwasher-safe statement from Dexas, so we do not claim it. Rinse it by hand, let it dry, and check the packaging or ask Dexas.
What sizes does the MudBuster come in?
Three: Small, Medium and Large. Dexas gives paw widths of up to 2 in, 2.5 to 3.5 in, and above 3.5 in. There is no extra small or extra large.
Is the MudBuster safe for a dog with a sore paw or injured nail?
We cannot say that. A broken nail, cut, rash or post-surgery paw is a question for your vet before any scrubbing tool is used.
How long does a MudBuster last?
Dexas gives no lifespan and we have no long-term use to report. Check the bristles and the cup for damage as it ages and replace it if either looks worn.
